Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. We maintain this deficit by liquidating stocks of ecological resources and accumulating waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The date of Earth Overshoot Day for each year is calculated by Global Footprint Network and announced on June 5 (World Environment Day). Earth Overshoot Day 2024 fell on August 1.
As European Grandparents for Climate, to mark the Earth Overshoot Day, we have had buttons designed with two different slogans. They look like the one above. You can download the full set here. There are two sets: one with the slogan “Earth Overshoot Day 2025” and one without. You could use the former to mark the Overshoot Day for your country. The latter can be used throughout the year. You can either have buttons made or post them as vignettes under your emails or use them for a banner.
The expected Country Overshoot Days 2025 have been calculated and published in December 2024. A country’s overshoot day marks the date when Earth Overshoot Day would fall if all of humanity consumed at the same level as the people in that country.
