According to a report from the Ember Global Energy Think Tank, for the first time in history, global electricity generation from renewable resources has surpassed that from coal — a milestone that marks a possible turning point in the fight against climate change. This remarkable achievement has been driven in large part by the enormous progress made by China and India. Especially Chinese rapid investments in solar, wind and hydropower and its exports of technology have reshaped the global energy landscape. In contrast, the United States and the European Union have regrettably seen an uptick in emissions, underscoring that the transition remains uneven and fragile. Of course, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have also created huge CO-emissions. Yet, the new figures prove that phasing out fossil fuels is not only possible but within reach. All nations must now redouble their efforts, and the European Union must not allow the omnibus processes to slow down climate protection. Failing to act decisively would mean selling the future of generations yet to come.
