Appeal to the EU Commission
We, the European Grandparents for Climate, an organization of roughly 20,000 elderly people across Europe engaged in the fight against climate change, see with indignation and disappointment how the European Commission is about to dismantle rapidly the rules of the Green Deal.
New laws that have taken years to put into force are being abolished rapidly, undermining the credibility and reliability of European politics. This creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and frustration for the citizenry and the business world alike.
All of this is being done without transparency and without the due process of consultations and impact assessments. The European Ombudswoman herself has confirmed this as maladministration. The EC Vice President Teresa Ribera also called it a „terrible political spectacle“.
We therefore call on you to desist from these harmful Omnibus processes and to persist in protecting our climate, air, soil, waters now and for future generations. Your policy should be guided by science and with a view to sustainability. The future should not be sacrificed to the greed of US fossil giants assembled in the so-called „Competitive Roundtable“ and Europe’s wealthiest incumbents. Europe should also not give in weakly to the pressure of the Trump Administration. As EC Vice President Teresa Ribera correctly wrote, “Europe’s power comes from setting the environmental bar high, not bending to whoever shouts loudest whether domestic lobbies or foreign players.”
Weakening regulation does not make Europe more competitive but vulnerable and dependent instead.
We ask you to put the interests of the European populations first as it is the duty you have sworn to.
Yours sincerely,
Godela von Kirchbach and Eva Riemer, Co-Chairs
