They could have been gardening, lounging, cycling, playing golf, cards, or poker—but no, they were there! They could have grumbled, groused, complained, or muttered under their breath – but no, they were there to shout, to hope, to raise their arms!
I saw one, then ten, then a hundred, then countless numbers of them, of all shapes and faces. Even a blind man with his cane, who had wanted to be there because, he said, “If I give up, life itself will collapse!”

Old – they were old, certainly – but it didn’t show: they walked, smiled, sang, and even danced. Yes, I saw at least ten or twenty of them dancing before the eyes of the thousands of young people marching past. They looked magnificent, tall, and light on their feet – proud to be there!

Proud to show that resignation to fate is not inevitable; that the future belongs to those who see challenges and rise to meet them, who know hardship and overcome it, who struggle on and keep going, step by step!

These people had nothing to gain personally. For each of them, being there was both a duty and a pleasure. Giving their time to those who have none, sharing their optimism with those weary of spirit. And even calling for a wake-up call, making a stand – why not?
