6th of October 2026. The annual opening session of the Danish Parliament is a festive day, celebrating our democracy. Politicians dress up for the occasion: men wearing ties, and women in high heels and elegant dresses. Politicians from Greenland and the Faroe Islands attend in their national costumes. The politicians walk from the parliament building to a nearby church, and after a brief service, they return for the official opening of the parliamentary year.

During this walk, we activists have the opportunity to convey our message to the elected representatives. This year, several green organizations united around a single message: stop the extraction of oil and gas from the North Sea.

High oil and gas prices in Europe, combined with concerns about the upcoming winter, have put pressure on the Danish government to expand oil and gas production in the North Sea. Doing so would set the green transition back by several years. In Denmark, 75% of all electricity comes from wind and solar energy, whereas wind and solar account for only 45% of total energy consumption.
